I have several thousand images in the single folder and would like to compare them in order to delete those that are nearly identical. Can I do this?

I tried the software and it appears I can only compare images from different folders?

zerodean, you can compare images within one folder too.
Use "Compare folders" for this and select the folder you want to compare. Do not forget to set "Include subfolders" mark if any
