UPC code support

I seem to be able to scan hardcover books by the barcode which gives me the ISBN number correctly but many paperbacksI have to enter ISBN number by hand because the UPC barcode does not truly represent the ISBN number....is there a way to search the UPC code?

What exactly do you get when scanning the barcode of paperback books? Perhaps it scans something else written next to ISBN.
